Bug: Firmware Updater fails in Firefox 158.0 but works in Chrome (Windows 11 26H2)
Environment
-----------
Robot: HP Otto Starter Kit
Firmware updater: https://hprobots.com/app/
Browser: Firefox 158.0
Operating System: Windows 11 Home 26H2 (build 26300.9711)
Description
-----------
I am unable to update the firmware using Firefox, while the exact same procedure works successfully in Google Chrome on the same computer.
Expected Behavior
-----------------
The updater should detect the robot in bootloader mode, connect successfully, and start the firmware flashing process.
Actual Behavior
---------------
When selecting the serial device in Firefox, the device list shows:
USB Serial
Instead of the expected:
USB-Serial (COM#)
After selecting the device and following the instructions exactly (including holding the BOOT button), the updater waits for approximately 30 seconds and then times out.
The firmware upload never starts.
During the connection attempt one of the servos occasionally moves randomly by a small amount.
Steps to Reproduce
------------------
1. Open https://hprobots.com/app/ in Firefox 158.0.
2. Connect the robot via USB.
3. Start the firmware update process.
4. Select the available device listed as "USB Serial".
5. Follow the instructions and hold the BOOT button.
6. Wait for the connection process to finish.
Result:
The updater times out after approximately 30 seconds and no firmware is uploaded.
Additional Information
----------------------
- The same computer, USB cable and robot were tested with Google Chrome.
- In Google Chrome the firmware update completed successfully on the first attempt.
- Drivers therefore appear to be installed correctly.
- The issue seems to be related specifically to Firefox compatibility or serial device detection in Firefox.
Possible Cause
--------------
The firmware updater may not correctly handle Web Serial communication or device identification in Firefox. The device label shown in Firefox differs from the expected "USB-Serial (COM#)" mentioned in the updater instructions.
Hi @ales_
Welcome to the community and thanks for the detailed diagnostics, we always attempt to have as much compatibility with as many browsers as possible, but in the case of Firefox, Brave or Safari or other common browsers, even if the firmware updater is compatible for the usb serial identification somehow.
Later on you still need to use the robot for programming via usb or bluetooth from the web app and for that the best ones and more reliable are Chrome or Edge or even Opera as we recommend in our code guide.
Here you can see more details that actually Web Serial API is not widely supported in Firefox Web Serial API - Web APIs | MDN
